What Comes Next . . . ?

The Women's March on Washington and its sister marches all over the world are done now.  In the United States this was the largest protest of its type ever.   Ever.

If you read this blog, you know that I am a passionate person about any number of things.  One of my readers left a very kind comment recently letting me know that she wasn't going to follow me any longer and why.  I know she's not the only one.  My mom taught me to have the courage of my convictions.  Sometimes that's hard.  I'm sorry that my passion for human rights is causing people to stop following me - and in some cases choosing to not be friends with me any longer - but each of us has to do what is best for ourselves and I understand that.

I want to share two things today.  First is a chart that made the rounds on Imgur and Facebook last month.  I encourage you to click and biggify this.

Why am I sharing it?

Because of the rise of fake news - on both sides of the political fence.  I think it's important to truly educate ourselves on what's really happening here.  Yes, it's comfortable to stick with our own confirmation bias and watch and read things that don't make us uncomfortable.  I don't feel that I have the luxury of that any longer. In addition, the past few days make it more important than ever that we call things what they really are. To that end:

Alternate Facts = LIES

Alt-Right = White Supremacist/Neo Nazi

Seriously, you can put lipstick on a pig.  It's still a pig.

The second thing I would like to share is actually more than one thing.  10 Actions/100 Days gives us 10 concrete things we can do during this administration's first 100 days to keep the momentum going.  This is going to be key.  One march does not a revolution make  :-)  (but man, it was a pretty awesome start  :-) ).

Also, my friend Michelle at Boulderneigh shared the Indivisible Guide, A Practical Guide to Resisting the Trump Agenda.  You can download the PDF at that link.

Onward.

Don't let them get you down! Stand by your own convictions! Over 3 million Americans did the same last weekend (me too). Don't let a couple of people ruin your passion.

I'm with you. I will never understand how women could vote for a sexual predator who disdains women. Never.

We are all entitled to our own opinion. And many times our opinion does not match a friend's. Annie, you have stated your opinion and you have every right to do so. We all have an equal right not to agree. It is just sorry that so many people have decided to take one side or another with this new administration and not try to mend fences. We have to live together in this country and I, for one, am tired of all the people who are bullying others with their opinions and feelings. What ever happened to accepting the outcome of election day and agreeing to live under the new administration? We need to give the man a chance. He's only been in office a short time. Please don't act like spoiled children who didn't get their way. We need to act like adults and set a good example to get this country healed and moving in the right direction. There are way too many people who live at or below the poverty level. There are too many people without a job. There are too many people dying from drugs. It's about time these things are changed. Is your protest against Trump going to change any of that?

In the words of the late Maya Angelou, " When someone show you who they are, believe them the first time." It's pretty clear to me who Mr. Trump is . . .

I'm saddened that you feel bullied, but yes, I do think protesting and resisting an agenda that I see as extremely frightening and divisive, can make a difference. It sounds like we want the same things - health care for all and help to rise up out of poverty. Unfortunately, I don't see those things happening under this new administration. However, - I say again - if it turns out that I am am wrong, I will be thrilled. :-)

Annie, I was reading another blog this morning and I found a passage that resonated with me:

"The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith." 1 Timothy 1:5

I will paraphrase what I read: We need civil discourse. Otherwise problems of society are not made known. But we need to love. Politics is not the problem, it's love. Everyone deserves love. Even the people we disagree with. We must be willing to speak and act in a way that shows love. "Because if you aren't, then you're part of the problem."

Reading this has made me think. I sometimes feel that politicians really don't represent or understand the real people of this country. Maybe Trump does have it wrong. We can only hope that the next 4 years will not be tumultuous or more divisive. But we all need to work together and come up with a solution.

You must stand up for your beliefs. I will not argue that point, EVER. Go into the world with courage and a strong heart.

I think if T's agenda mirrored your valid points above, we would all be on board. We all want the best person to lead us who addresses all of our concerns, not the one's that are clearly politically motivated. T's approach is to bully in the name of change. When is this ever a good or sustainable approach? He shrugs off whoever or whatever doesn't fall into line with his thinking. Whether or not you agree with the protests, it is within everyone's right to be heard. We ALL have the right to vote amongst the other rights, because people didn't just accept the status quo and remain silent. I am pretty sure men called women "spoiled" and "ungrateful" because they wanted the right to vote versus being content with letting their betters speak for them...

As a perceived unifier and mender of fences, shouldn't T have said "I hear you, and I am going to do my best to boost your confidence in me. Isn't it great to be in America where you can safely make your voice heard when you don't agree..."

No, as President his concerns lay with the "lying press" and whether or not the crowd photos were correct.
