Important Stuff . . .

I was thinking about important stuff yesterday. Things I've learned in my life thus far. I've learned a lot, actually, and a lot of it I learned from my mom. Most moms are like that, aren't they? But I think that there are some things that no one can teach you. You likely get some help along the way, but there is stuff you have to learn the hard way.

1. Don't wear stripes and plaids together. I was in the 4th grade, I think, and I had these plaid skirts that I really, really liked. And my favorite blouse was a striped one with a sort of a bow tie thingy. My mom worked, and by then I was old enough to get myself ready for school. Somehow she managed to not see me that day, and so I picked my two favorite pieces of wardrobe and wore them proudly to school. I remember how horrified she was (how things looked was always very important to her - and she always looked perfect) when she picked me up after work . . . I didn't do that again.

2. Kids are cruel. Youngsters are pack animals and they will pick on/ostracize/make fun of any kid who is different. I know this because I was "the new kid" in a variety of schools. We moved 13 times (I'm not kidding) before I was out of college, and I attended at least three different grade schools. We moved right before high school, so I knew no one. The pack was already formed by the time I got there each time. I think it is a great testament to the human spirit that kids make it out of high school at all, really. I wouldn't go back to those years for all the tea in China. And yet, we are the sum of all our experiences, so after all, I'm grateful. I am who I am now because of the struggles and triumphs I have made it through.

3. Drunk dialing is never a good idea. You will, without fail, regret it in the morning.

4. You need a reason to get up in the morning. And if you don't have one, you'd better find one. We make our own choices, and I have learned that we create our own realities. It's never anyone else's fault. If you're not happy, choose a different path - choose being the operative word. Believe it or not, we choose how we react and respond. We can choose to be miserable victims (and who doesn't from time to time?), but when the rubber hits the road, that's when you gotta get up, shake it off, and choose to move forward. I think this is probably the most important lesson I have learned thus far - we can choose to embrace every day that we get, and therein lies my favorite tenet: Dance Like No One is Watching.

5. Never iron naked. Need I say more?

You're funny. Some of us don't have to learn #3 (I don't drink, period). #4 is very close to what my mother taught me: Happiness is a decision. This tempts me to do a similar post sometime. Have a GREAT weekend!

I truly believe most people don't get #4. Life is what you make of it. It's about being grateful for what you have and changing things that don't make you happy.

Great post.
Great Post....I agree with you on #4. Life is too short to be unhappy...Choose Happiness!
You will NEVER regret it in the end.

I also agree with #4. I think it's easyfor us to forget that it's our trials that define us the most. And aren't we lucky that we can choose....if we dare.

Thanks for sharing.
